Examples of places of tourist interest in Arouca:

Monastery of Arouca - Documented since the 10th century, the Monastery of Arouca became exclusively female from 1154 onwards. But it was in the 13th century that the monastery became established, after D. Mafalda joined, daughter of D. Sancho I, who was buried there. It was also at this time that the monastic community adopted the Cistercian rule in 1226.

Paiva Walkways are located on the left bank of the Paiva River, in Arouca municipality, Aveiro, Portugal. They are 8 km that provide a walk "untouched", surrounded by unique beauty of landscapes, in an authentic natural sanctuary along the brave waters downhills, quartz crystals and endangered species in Europe. The route extends from the river beaches of Areinho and Espiunca, lying between them, the Vau beach. A journey through biology, geology and archeology that will remain, of course, in heart, soul and in mind of any nature lover.

The 516 Arouca bridge is the largest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world and is located in Arouca, in the Aveiro district, Portugal. With 516 meters in length, and an elevation of 175 meters, it connects the banks of the Paiva River. While crossing the bridge, you will have a breathtaking view over Garganta do Paiva and Cascata das Aguieiras, both geosites of the UNESCO Arouca Geopark territory.516 Arouca Bridge is located in Arouca, next to the famous Passadiços do Paiva."

"The Arouca UNESCO Global Geopark is located in northern Portugal and coincides with the area of the Arouca Municipality. This territory is located on the western border of the north sub-plateau of the Iberian Peninsula, and is characterized by mountains carved by narrow valleys. The average altitudes range from 200 to 600 m but exceeds 1000 m in Freita (1100 m) and Montemuro (1222 m) mountains. The Arouca UNESCO Global Geopark is renowned for its exceptional geological heritage of international significance, with 41 geosites. Rocks that outcrop in this region tell stories of the ancient seas that bordered the supercontinent Gondwana 520 to 420 million year (Ma) ago and chronicle the formation of the next supercontinent called Pangea that formed 250 Ma ago. The Arouca UNESCO Global Geopark territory is framed in the major morphostructural unit of the Iberian Peninsula – the Hesperian Massif, which is the largest fragment of the Variscan basement that crops out in Europe.

Rising like a giant over the town of Arouca, Freita extends its green mantle over the lands of Arouca, São Pedro do Sul and Vale de Cambra. Its magic, its easy enchantment and the air of lost paradise that it reveals to those who enter it, make the “Enchanted Mountain” one of the must-sees of the Arouca Geopark."

Serra da Freita - "Crossing its paths means encountering points of the history of these lands – such as the Mamoa da Portela da Anta -, small villages that fit into the landscape, unique phenomena in the world, such as the Pedras Parideiras, and breathtaking landscapes, such as the Frecha da Mizarela. Along the plateau, we find 17 of the 41 geosites of the Arouca Geopark, unique conditions for practicing some adventure sports and hiking trails that guide us through the unique beauty of this mountain range"

Panoramic view of Senhora da Mó The splendor of the Arouca valley!

When you arrive in the town of Arouca, it’s almost impossible not to be struck by the hill of Senhora da Mó and its chapel. Arouca is a land strongly marked by “Moorish” legends and this little chapel bears witness to this. Inside, a painting from 1827 tells us that in 1027 a Christian, trapped in a corn chest with a millstone on top and a Moor sitting on it, made his supplications to Our Lady for help. To the amazement of the Moor, whom the Christian forgave, his prayers were answered. At the ringing of the bell, the next day, by a miracle, the Christian was freed. The festival in honor of Our Lady of the Millstone, patron saint of the fields, crops and animals and protector against droughts and thunderstorms, is one of the most significant gatherings among the inhabitants of the Moldes valley and Arouca.
