If you fancy a day at the beach, Calheta Beach is a ten-minute drive, where you can also find bars, restaurants and a supermarket. Also, close by is Engenho da Calheta, one of the oldest sugar cane mills on the island. The facilities and its machinery were used in the production of sugar cane brandy – head to the tasting room or wine bar here to sample the wares. Calheta is around a forty-minute drive from Funchal city centre, where you’ll find Funchal Cathedral, tropical gardens, the pretty harbour and Madeira wine cellars.
